Tree of the Month
Common Pear - (Pyrus communis)
Pyrus communis or common pear is one of three new fruit trees which have recently been planted in the Recreation Ground, the others being Malus sylvestris (crab apple) and Prunus avium (wild cherry). The three trees will not only be good for wildlife, but will provide a variety of foliage, bark, blossom and autumn colour for everyone to enjoy. The cost of the fruit trees was covered by a grant from the Tree Council and the trees were ordered and planted by the Martlesham Tree Wardens in consultation with Martlesham in Bloom. The common pear is a deciduous tree with glossy dark green leaves. Clusters of white flowers are produced in mid-spring followed by edible, pear-shaped to spherical green to yellow fruit up to 10cm long.

More information and inspiration to follow over the coming months. In the meantime, why not take some photos recording your winter wildlife wonderland. Send your photos to enquiries@martleshamcouncil.org.uk
